ずいぶんと前のことですが、ベトナムからたくさんの難民が小さなボートにすし詰め状態となって国から避難するために海にこぎだして行く、という事象が多発して世界的な社会問題となったことがありました。どういう背景だったかはよく理解していなかったけど、テレビでよくながされていた映像は印象に残っています。
これは、そういうボートピープルと呼ばれる人たちに対して、香港政府が本国に強制送還措置をとっていたことに抗議の意味をこめてリリースされたものです。
ロッド・スチュワートのカバーで大変有名な曲ですが、オリジナルはSutherland Brothersが1972年にリリースしたアルバムに収録されています。
